- Graduated from New York University with a master’s degree in
  Latin American Studies.
- Conducted thesis research in Bolivia;  Interned in social media
  management for the North American Congress on Latin America.
- Employed at the State Department working with on visa
  adjudications.

Words of Wisdom: “Stay humble and true to yourself. You know what your passions are and life will come together all the more seamlessly if you just stick to what interests you. I especially want this message to resonate with humanities/social science types. Simply put, not everything in life should be reduced to economic output or a job - what a depressing world that would be!  Love what you do and you'll rarely falter - even the stumbles seem small and insignificant when you're giving your best and putting your heart into what you love.”



Danielle Bacon

Alina Escalera

Shawn Higgins

Shawn Higgins, Student Advisory Board, Volume III, 2009

- Enrolled at the University of Connecticut earning a Ph.D. in
  English.
- Graduated from Columbia University with a  master’s degree in
  American Studies in 2011. 
- Employed as an instructor at Temple University's Japan campus
  and at Keio University in Japan (2011-2015). 
- Published a book chapter, a peer-reviewed article, a book review,
  and three encyclopedia articles. 
- Presented at over 15 national and international academic
  conferences. 
- Became a father in 2014.

  minority students to pursue academic careers.

Michelle Murphy

Michelle Murphy-Mariscal,   Journal Author, Volume III, 2009

- Employed as a Lead Biologist for the Western Riverside County
  Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan's Biological
  Monitoring Program. 
- Graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a
  master’s degree in Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology. 
- Co-authored several manuscripts which were published in scientific
  journals.

Philip Nee

- Graduated from Cornell University with a master’s degree in
  Geophysics.  
- Presented research at the American Geophysical Union (AGU)
  conferences and published research results in G3:
  Genes,Genomes,Genetics Journal.

Ann Nguyen

Ann Nguyen, Journal Author, Volume I, 2007

- Enrolled at Loma Linda University earning a Ph.D. in Clinical
  Neuropsychology.  Her research focuses on neurodegenerative
  disease and aging. 
- After completing degree at UCR spent three and a half years
  working with organizations and services that serve populations
  of varying ages with specifically marked behavioral difficulties,
  developmental, and severe persistent mental illnesses.

Words of Wisdom: “Students who have a clear vision and goal in mind after graduation may find themselves questioning and changing career, as interests fluctuate. Take as much time as you need to confirm or re-discover your passion through discussions with others in the field, research, and work/volunteer experience.  Best of luck on your journey!”


Dante O'Hara

Dante O'Hara, Journal Author, Volume VIII, 2014

- Enrolled at the University of California, Riverside earning a Ph.D. in
  Materials Science and Engineering. 
- Recently published a more advanced article in 2D materials on the
  same project in 2015 (4th author).  Continued to develop new 2D
  material for spintronics and optoelectronics.

Dorian Pekins

- Enrolled at the University of California, Riverside earning a Ph.D.
  in Computer Science. 
- Recently published articles in top-tier computer systems
  conferences (SOSP 2013, EuroSys 2015) 
- Awarded the National GEM Consortium Ph.D. Engineering
  Fellowship 
- Awarded the Google UNCF Scholarship 
- Awarded the NASA Harriet G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship  
- Awarded the CAMP Bridge-to-the-Doctorate Fellowship 
- Awarded the AGEP Summer Research Fellowship 
- Participated in internships at Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs
  and NEC Research Labs.

  M.A. in Public History. 
- Awarded a Gladys Kriebel Delmas Visiting Scholar at the Rock and
  Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives 
- Guest curator at the Riverside Art Museum and California Museum
  of Photography 
- Presented papers at meetings of the National Council on Public
  History, Cultural Studies Association, and Collegium for African
  American Research.

Victoria Tejera

Victoria Tejera, Student Advisory Board, Volume VIII, 2014

- Currently pursuing employment opportunities at the  University of
  California, San Diego. 
- Graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a B.A. in
  English.  After graduation worked for a year at University of
  California, Riverside's School of Medicine assisting the Institutional
  Officer, Dr. Mahendr Kochar, with publishing the sixth edition of his
  medical textbook, Kochar's Clinical Medicine for students.

  Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry. 
- Employed in the laboratory of Dr. Nancy Allbritton, developing
  analytical tools for measuring enzyme kinetics in single cells. 
- Awarded the National Institutes of Health Ruth L. Kirschstein
  National Research Service Award (NRSA) Predoctoral Fellowship.

Words of Wisdom: “It is more than okay to recognize that you will sometimes find yourself out of your element; if this is the case, don't be afraid to reach out to the wonderful experts at UCR.  You have some amazing resources at your disposal, make sure you use them!”

- 2016/2017 Fulbright Research Scholar – Germany
- 2016 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Program Fellowship
- 2017 Fall will begin Ph.D. in Chemical & Environmental Engineering at Yale University

Words of Wisdom: "Push yourself out of your comfort zone during your undergraduate years. Push yourself to apply for opportunities you want, but might not think you can get or afford, because those opportunities could take you somewhere unexpected. Take the chance to study abroad or work for an internship out of state. Those are the experiences in college that will be the most defining. Use all the resources you have available to you while at UCR because you will be surprised by how much you'll grow during your time as a Highlander."
